I have been told that 'upward coaching' is a new thing that companies are doing as part of their management development strategy. I have never heard of this before and wonder if anyone can tell me about it, please?

Upward Coaching or Reverse Mentoring as it is sometimes called has been used in large organisations for some time. It is typically used to change the mind set of top people. Often organisations will introduce this type of development technique to help senior managers keep in touch with changes in markets or technology, or as part of a wider culture change. It has even been used on diversity programmes to help senior managers understand issues that may limit progress of women and or people from minority backgrounds.
